Background
We began this research programme in 2001 with a three year Action Research Project to develop innovative ways to help nurses achieve evidence based practice in partnership with older people.
Our achievements include working with a community of practising nurses to:-
- Define Gerontological Nursing
- Describe the values and principles for Gerontological Nursing practice
- Establish a new approach to developing practice involving older people
- Produce evidence based care guidance (Best Practice Statements) for nurses that have been tested and demonstrated in practice
- Build a virtual practice development college
- Refine the demonstration project model through research
- Share our findings through publications, conferences, seminars
- Create resources to support continuing professional development arising from the project
