A Partnership for Care , an NHS Scotland policy document, calls for patients and members of the public to be involved in the development of services, standards, and policies for health and social care. The Involving Older People Project is exploring how this can be done with older people and carers using computers.
We will find out if older people and carers in the project need any special help to use a computer. We will show people in their own home how to use a computer and we will provide them with any special aids to help them where necessary. Project staff will visit people at least once a month to continue computer skills training, and to provide them with support. Once the participants are comfortable using the computers they will begin to work with project nurses to develop care guidelines.
We want to see if this project works. First of all we want to find out how people get on with using the computer and if it makes any difference to their day to day lives. We will be asking participants to do some written tests about their health and wellbeing and about using computers at the beginning of the project. We will then be asking people to complete the tests again at the end of the project to see if there is any difference. We will also keep records of when we visit and work with people in their homes, and about progress in developing the care guidelines in the discussion forums.
The Involving Older People Project is an extension of the Gerontological Nursing Demonstration Project. The Demonstration Project was set up to help nurses from all over Scotland to share and develop best care practices in the care of older people.
